Although discussion of the condition has been wide-ranging within medicine, psychiatry, psychology, and education, until now there has been no study devoted to autism’s powerful depiction in narrative form.
Recommendations for families, art teachers of students with autism and art teacher preparation are provided.įrom concerns about an ‘autism epidemic’ to the MMR vaccine crisis, autism is a source of peculiar fascination in the contemporary media. This study offers a paradigm for inclusive art education that operates within the social model of dis/ability and considers strategies for full inclusion with art curriculum and art materials. It is shown that art functions as communication and a way of connecting to the world around them, acting as a form of literacy through the visual text of their artwork. In the examination of these adolescents' experiences the engagement with art making and the role of art in the lives of these artists is explored. These perceptions included varying ideas of competence, ability and struggle associated with an identity as 'autistic'. This study revealed the perceptions of stakeholders about art and autism that informed the access these adolescent artists had to art education and art materials. "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.This research engages a combined qualitative methodology of arts-informed research and critical descriptive ethnography to study thirteen adolescent artists with autism as they engage in art making across multiple art education contexts. Carrie has trained hundreds of students in the aerial arts as well as countless individuals who have become teachers using her Aerial Circus Training & Safety Manual. Combining a love of the circus with her therapeutic background, Carrie does work-shops and trainings in Circus Arts Therapy throughout the country, including but not limited to Cirque Du Monde: A Cirque Du Soleil Outreach Program that uses circus arts as an alternative educational approach to help youth in difficulty around the world.
She has served as aerial supervisor, play therapist, and consultant to the internationally renowned Camp Winnarainbow in California. Carrie spent 15 years practicing and teaching Circus Arts in Atlanta, Georgia where, in 1993, she founded Circus Camp which serves over 1000 children each summer. After having studied 6 years with the students of the FSU Flying High Circus, Carrie began teaching circus arts at the age of 14. is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker as well as an aerial dancer with over 20 years of experience as an instructor, performer, and choreographer.
